Types of Pipeline Pigs

There are many different types of pipeline pigs out there today. While the initial models were quite basic and used to simply clear the lines, the development of technologies has allowed pipeline pigging to evolve into much more than just clean pipes.

There are the basic utility pigs which are inserted into the pipeline to scrape and remove debris from the line such as wax.  Utility pigs also include foam pigs, solid cast pigs, mandrel pigs and spherical pigs.

Inspection pigs, also known as smart pigs or in-line inspection pigs, are used to gather information about the pipes from the inside. These pipeline pigs use two different and distinct methods, either magnetic flux leakage (MFL) and ultrasonics (UT), to gather information regarding the interior of a pipeline. The information they provide includes pipeline curvature and diameter, temperature and/or pressure, and metal loss or corrosion.

Specialty pigs, like plugs, can isolate a portion of the pipeline for any maintenance work that may need to be performed. The pig plug keeps the pipeline pressure in the check by blocking the pipeline on either side of where the work is being done.

Gel pigs used with a combination of gelled liquids, can be used alone or in conjunction with conventional pigs. There are a variety of uses for gel pigs that include, hydrotesting, dewatering and condensate removal, product separation, debris removal, as well as removing a stuck pig.

With the number of models to choose from to meet the number of different situations, don’t leave the decision of what to do or use to chance. Jacaranda mimosifoila

Technically Jacaranda mimosifoila ,but more commonly just Jacaranda, wows us with its large vibrant lavender colored flowers and is one of the more popular Florida trees. Though it's been said that they start out looking somewhat odd as saplings and young trees, by the time they near 20 feet, their branches take on domed crown-like shape. They are one of the most distinctive and beautiful trees as their foliage and enormous bright purple flowers usher in Florida's springtime.

The Jacaranda is a large tree. It's best suited as a focal point in a medium sized yard or anywhere on a larger piece of land. It can reach 40 feet tall quickly. It thrives best with plenty of room and should bve placed in partial to full sun. Jacarandas are slow to flower when grown from seed and even take 5 to 7 years before flowering when grafted cuttings are used..

Caring for Jacaranda trees:
  • You should stake your young tree for one year as they can be blown over in Florida's strong winds.
  • Because the Jacaranda has thin bark, lawn equipment like mowers and line-trimmers can damage it. Leave a mulch-bed or similar around it to allow space for mowing and trimming.
  • When planting the tree, you may choose to add peat moss, top soil or composted cow manure to fertilize the rootball.

Risky Pigging

Depending on the type of pipeline you have or the regularity in which it is cleaned will affect the risk to the operator and piping system.

Regularly scheduled pigging, whether weekly, monthly or some other time frame, is recommended for pipelines known to produce wax or sand deposits in order to keep consistent flow and to prevent potential blockage. Routine pigging operations allow the amount of buildup in the line as well as the features of the pipeline to be known, thus lowering the risk of the pigging session.

In contrast, extended periods of time between pigging sessions tend to result in a higher rate of risk for the pipeline operator,as well as the pipe itself. This is due, mainly, to the unknown condition of the piping. Many older pipelines may never have been pigged in their lifetime because they were constructed without pig launchers or receivers. Additional risk factors arise from infrequent pigging, where a pipeline may have extensive internal buildup of various deposits or been subjected to external damage. Both of these situations will result in considerable restricted movement of the poly pig equipment.

Don’t gamble with the potential risks. Put your piping system in the hands of professionals, like Roger M Cimbora, Sr., General Manager and his well trained associates at Professional Piping Services. Call them today at 813-994-0032 or toll free at 800-780-6098 to discuss all your pipeline pigging needs.

Wastewater reuse or water reclamation pipeline cleaning

I covered this briefly a while back but I thought it could use a little deeper treatment, so here goes:

Wastewater reuse or water reclamation, commonly known as reclaimed or recycled water comes from diverting what would be wastewater into a system where it will be ‘reused’ for non-potable needs.

Greywater Pipe System Cleaning

Reclaimed water systems generally reuse greywater. Greywater, on average, accounts for nearly 60% of all wastewater produced in homes and typically comes from bathtubs and showers, washing machines, sinks and dishwashers. The design of such plumbing systems makes this greywater available to be used or ‘recycled’ for irrigation purposes, exterior washing among many other applications. Thus, offering significant environmental and water conservation benefits.

The demand and use of reclaimed or reuse.water continues to expand in order to be compliant with changing cost effective practices and conservation demands.

As with all piping systems, your reuse water pipes can benefit from cleaning to help maintain maximum flow capacity for many reasons including;
  • Various biological growths, which are not removed by flushing, are found in the system
  • The system was installed under challenging circumstances and/or not properly cleaned prior to it being placed in service
  • Multiple grievances about plugged sprinkler heads, valves or controls and piping
Let the friendly people at Professional Piping services help you. Call them toll free at 800-780-6098 or locally in Tampa Bay area at 813-994-0032 to discuss all your pipeline needs.

The Importance of Unobstructed Flow

For companies that depend on an unobstructed flow of product, pipeline cleaning produces a level of assurance that their pipelines will continue to be free flowing. Buildup inside the piping system will slow that flow of product, and can in time plug the pipeline.  This level of obstruction can cause hazardous cracks and flaws to the pipeline.

Pipeline Pigs, or Poly Pigs, expedite the cleaning of piping systems by scraping the inner walls of the pipes and clearing or pushing out the debris as it moves along. The poly pig can also be set to inspect the line as it cleans.

Professional Piping Services offers various pipeline cleaning solutions for various types of industries, including but not limited to; refineries, food processing, chemical, and manufacturing plants, as well as making newly constructed pipelines ready prior to being commissioned.

There are general steps taken that apply to the majority of piping systems to be cleaned such as; arranging the pipes valving to segregate the leg that is being cleaned, locating and operating all lateral and/or in-line valves that will be used during the pigging session, insuring the direction of the integrity and flow of the pipeline by the launching of a line size swab, and utilizing a series of pigs in various densities and/or dimensions to obtain optimal cleaning.

Contact Professional Piping Services at 800-780-6098 to discuss the specific and unique requirements of your pipeline. Their knowledgeable and experienced team will help you with information and offer recommendations on the proper cleaning equipment and method to best meet your needs.

Preparing Trees for Hurricanes

Hurricane season is here again, officially lasting June 1st through the end of November. Let's review some important things.

Tropical Cyclones, that is tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes, threaten Florida every year, and often cause extensive damage to landscapes and surrounding structures. You can easily help make your landscape more hurricane-resistant, so that it's less likely to suffer damage during a major storm with a few simple considerations and a little pre-planning.

Before a storm threatens, consider doing the following:
  • During a hurricane, having the right tree in the right place can help protect your property from strong winds by acting as a wind-break. However a poorly maintained tree will likely do more harm than good. Improperly pruned trees face a greater likelihood that they might break or fall during the storm. Many fallen and damaged trees often seen after a storm may be from the improper cutting or pruning of trees. It is important that your trees are serviced by a trained professional well before a storm threatens. It is important to remember, never begin any pruning during a Hurricane, or Tropical Storm, Watch or Warning.
  • Ideally you should have your trees pruned during the tree species dormant season or during early spring but it’s never too late. Ask Mid Florida Tree Service about trimming your particular species. A tree more likely to survive storms is compact, with a low center of gravity; a strong, sturdy trunk; and a deep, symmetrical root system. The native live oak is a great example of a "survivor" tree, given the right environment and care during its life. Whereas, a more vulnerable tree during storms is one with a high center of gravity, a dense canopy, a decayed trunk, two or more trunks, or shallow roots. Shallow roots result from shallow soil or a high water table. Remember that any tree is more susceptible to toppling during a storm if it suffers from construction damage to roots, poor growing conditions, small root zones, and disease or insect problems.
  • Ensure that your trees have been cleared of deadwood. Deadwood invites pests, and breaks away into projectiles too easily during a storm.
  • Work with a licensed and insured certified arborist.
  • Don't over-do the trimming or pruning. A certified arborist will ensure that the canopy is preserved, taking no more than 25% of it's normal growth. Correct pruning is likely the most important part of helping healthy trees survive hurricanes.
An Arborist can also help you to train young trees so they develop a sturdy, well-spaced framework of healthy branches along a dominant trunk and help maintain this form as far up into the tree as possible while it grows by reducing the length of competing stems and branches.

Avoid cutting the root system. If there is a conflict between the root system and a structure or project, let the arborist review the situation and determine if it's safe to prune the roots.

Ensure proper disposal of cut wood. Loose branches and logs have the potential to become projectiles during a severe storm.

Have all stumps ground down below grade. Stumps above grade pose a tripping hazard, regardless of season.

Mid Florida Tree Service has the experience and knowledge to help ensure your trees and yard are as ready as possible from potential storm threats.

Choose the right trees for your property

Some have said that just as the eyes are the window to the soul, your yard and landscaping are the windows to your home and your choice of trees and shrubs play a huge part in that.  They are possibly the biggest impression, favorable or not, that visitors or passersby will have of your yard and home so choosing the right trees for your property can cause a great deal of tension. Thankfully, with just a little information and suggestions from a Certified Arborist, like the ones at Mid Florida Tree Service, you'll replace tension with confidence.

Chances are your yard is already telling you what type of trees will most likely thrive on your property. There are a few major topics common to all properties that will need answering for you to be on your way to a more beautiful landscape.

Soil:
The texture of your soil is a factor to consider. Hard, compacted soil and loose soils are suited to different species. This texture dictates the hydration and aeration of the soil. Take clay, for example. It's know for being very fertile, but it's poor airflow and drainage can be an issue for some trees. Maples, however, thrive in it and evergreen shrubs do even better.

Loamy soil that is fertile and retains water well give you a chance to practice your green thumb with great results. Many pines, Cottonwood, Willows, the Douglas fir and many other trees as well as vegetables and herbs tend to do very well in loamy soil.

Climate:
Of course, the climate is a huge consideration when choosing a tree. For example, most apple trees don't do well in Florida, but a few specialized cultivars are the exception. The Tampa Bay area has a tropical to near tropical climate. It's hot and humid most of the year. There are some dry months, the occasional drought, and a somewhat cool winter with the rare freeze. More specific to your home, is the amount of sunlight that reaches the location of your new tree.

Ash trees are a low maintenance option in hot climates. Their height and sprawl make them great shade trees. Eucalyptus is another good option that's know for enduring the heat and our dry spells.

Pines do great in wet or dry areas. They provide a pleasant scent and are great for the winter holidays.

Will it Fit?
Consider not only the size of the tree, you plant, but the size it will grow into. Are you considering a centerpiece for your landscape, or a living privacy fence? A maple or sycamore in the middle of a large yard will provide a nice bit of shade. A row of dwarf junipers are nice to  run along a property line. Whatever vision you have for your property, good measurements will ensure the right choices are made.

Professionals, like those at Mid Florida Tree Service, can help you choose the right trees, and help care for them over the course of their lives. Their experienced and knowledgeable crews and Certified Arborists are among the best in the bay area. Mid Florida offers trimming, tree and stump removal, fertilization and general tree care.

Pipe Pigging Safety

Pigging requires an experienced operator hand. There are reports every year from OSHA of incidents which detail operators sustaining injuries, both minor and those requiring hospitalization, that occurred while performing a pigging operation. Some of the most common causes of these events are:
  • opening of the main process valve while the closure door is not fully closed
  • opening of the closure door while the vessel is still pressurized
  • opening of the closure door while a high concentration of H₂S or other toxins remains inside the vessel
  • leaving the vent valve open while the vessel is being pressurized with its medium
These causes all relate directly back to improper operation, due to inexperience or miscalculation, of the closure door(s) and the process valves. These kinds of incidents can be avoided by adding valve interlocks to the systems and most importantly by hiring experienced professionals like the ones at Professional Piping Services.

Pigging safety relies on knowing, and a strict adherence to, safety procedures which detail safe valve operating sequences. Though not intended to replace professional operators, valve interlocks can help enforce such sequences by physically blocking incorrect operations. Once permanently mounted to their respective valves or the closure door, valve interlocks block the operation of said door or valve unless the correct keys are inserted. The idea behind valve interlocking is the transfer of keys. Each lock comes with two uniquely coded keys: one for the locked open position and one for the locked closed position. During a pigging operating procedure, only the key that belongs to the valve or door next in sequence is free at a time.

Don’t risk employee safety and potential system damage to the possibility of saving a few dollars. Getting the job done safely and done right the first time is worth more than the minimal additional costs. Hire industry professionals with the experience and knowledge to provide you and your piping system excellent service. For service in Florida, call Professional Piping Services at 800-780-6098 to discuss how they can assist you.

Cleaning Process for Force Mains

Of all the types of piping systems that are cleaned and restored to their maximum flow capacity, force mains usually provide the most dramatic impact.

One method for determining a force main’s efficiency is comparing its current volume of flow energy consumption with previously pumped flow volumes per kilowatt hour of energy used. If the pumps are working properly but the system is now pumping 800 gallons per kilowatt hour instead of 1200 that is was pumping a couple of years ago, it is likely the system has gotten and will continue to get dirty.

The force main system will continue to remain online and in service during the cleaning process.  NO downtime! (The only exception to this, is if it becomes necessary to create an access port into the system. In this case, a brief planned shutdown period may be required or a tapping sleeve and valve may be used.)

Some factors involved in the cleaning process:
  • Existing connections to the system, i.e., manifolds, headers, clean outs, modifications of inline fittings and designed access ports are used to enter the system.
  • All of the flow and contents of the system are discharged into the normal operating end of the system, i.e., manhole, wet well, other force mains, bar screen, etc. Sometimes special consideration must be given to handling the cleaning load resulting from the cleaning operation
  • The cleaning is planned after the station and systems particulars are carefully reviewed and is done with close coordination with the systems management and operators.
  • Supplemental flow may be required to augment the cleaning of a force main. Both to insert the cleaning poly pigs into the system and, as required, for systems that do not develop a discharge volume sufficient for the cleaning process.
  • The cleaning process is safely multidimensional, therefore it can be used to clean systems of varying inline diameters, typically smaller to larger, as well as enter and exit the system at points with different diameters.
  • A properly operating inline plug, check or gate valves pose no difficulties for the cleaning procedure.
  • There is no restriction on the length of a system that can be cleaned nor one that has severe changes in its profile.
  • The cleaning is always done carefully and incrementally. This allows the systems hydraulic capacity to purge itself and not put the operation of the system in jeopardy or at risk.

As with any job of this importance, it should be left in the hands of skilled professionals, like the people at Professional Pipings Services. Contact them today toll free at 800-780-6098 or local at 813-994-0032 if you suspect your force mains are in need of cleaning. They’ll walk you through a cleaning process designed specifically for you and help you schedule a maintenance routine to avoid reduced flow in the future

Trees offer a lifetime of benefits

We see trees every day and everywhere. Their existence a tribute to their strength amidst the urban jungles of our cities and the sprawl of suburbia  We see them alongside the roads and streets during our commute to work, driving the kids to school or just running errands. We see them standing tall in city parks where people gather to walk their dogs and take their kids to play. Trees can appear as close as those in our yards surrounding or homes and far away as the distant hills of nearby town.

Trees are everywhere, making the work that's required to keep them healthy of high importance.

In order to enjoy the trees in our yards and neighborhoods for a lifetime, action should be taken now.  Just think about taking the opportunities to relax under their generous canopy, reading a good book, having a picnic with friends and family, or taking a long mid-day nap in the shade.

Tree care however, does not have to be a chore. You can easily make it a springtime/summer family activity or hobby. Your trees will thank you for the time spent by providing you with visual and overall property benefits for many years.

It’s time now to begin preparing for the coming warmer spring and summer weather. It’s time to have your tree care needs looked at and tended to so they are healthy and prepared for the next season.

  • You can use this basic spring checklist to keep up with your tree care needs this season:
  • Inspect trees and shrubs for any injury they may have incurred during the winter months
  • Have removed trees that are found to be at critical risk.
  • Cut back any diseased, unsafe or dead limbs and branches
  • Brace or cable weak limbs in advance of the often severe weather during the summer. You may even consider lightning protection installation on more mature and treasured trees..
  • Inspect trees and other foliage for insects and treat as necessary.
  • Mulch, fertilize, cut back perennials, prune shrubs, weed bed and plant new trees and shrubs

It's important to understand what needs to be done, how to do the work that goes into tree care and why the effort makes a difference. If you have any questions about your tree care needs, you should contact a local tree service company with professional and certified arborists on staff, like the experts at Mid Florida Tree Service.  Let them determine the next steps to better trees, and better landscapes for you.

Caring for Fruit Trees in Florida

Florida is well known for many things. Sunshine, temperate climate, beach life, theme parks and world famous citrus and strawberries are among a few.

In fact, the Mid-Florida region offers many fruits that grow well in our climate. There are the obvious citrus like Oranges, Grapefruit, Limes and Lemons but there are also Avocado, Bananas, Figs, Guava, Jackfruit, Loquats, Lychee, Mangoes, Mulberries, Papayas, Peaches, and Tamarind that all grow well in Florida’s temperate climate.

Growing fruit trees can be a valuable asset to home gardeners who want to save money, enjoy health benefits of freshly picked fruit, and like to have a wider variety than is typically found in most grocery stores. Picking your own fruit allows you to enjoy the full flavor that only fruit fresh from the tree can offer. Commercially grown and distributed fruit is often times picked long before it’s ready so it “looks” ripe by the time it reaches the store. This means that the fruit hasn’t fully developed and will be lacking in both flavor and nutrients.

While a lot of trees can take years to grow from seed before producing fruit, there are many options available for getting a harvest much sooner. You might consider buying a grafted tree that will produce fruit in the first year or buying mature trees that are already producing. It’s advantageous to take into considering the schedule for mature fruit and plan a garden that will produce nearly year round.

  • Some basic guidelines to planting fruit trees are:
  • Allow ten to fifteen feet of space between fruit trees.
  • Plant where your fruit trees will receive at least six hours of sun a day during the growing season.
  • Sun should not be blocked by buildings, fences or other obstacles.
  • Plant at least three feet from sidewalks and driveways and six feet away from buildings, as roots will spread wider than the tree crown.

Once you know what kind of fruit you want to grow and have determined that there is enough sun and space, your next step is to select varieties and rootstocks that are appropriate for your situation. The idea is to choose varieties that are suitable for your climate to maximize your success.

After the trees are planted, there will be general maintenance required.  The amount will depend on what kind of trees you have planted.  Watering, mulching to help retain soil moisture, fertilizing, insect and disease control and pruning or removing damaged and dead wood.

Since every tree comes with its own strategy for success, we strongly recommend contacting a professional, like the ones at Mid Florida Tree Service, to assist you in making the most out of each tree. Call them today at 813-986-2258.

The Importance of Disinfecting Water Supply Pipelines

Whatever the source of water for a piped system, regular treatment and disinfection is in order to ensure safe drinking water to communities. Below are a couple of the main reasons for disinfecting your lines.
  • When a pipeline is repaired, upgraded, freshly pigged or even after it is newly laid, some contamination almost always gets into the pipes from the water, mud, and soil in and around the trench or access point to the piping and form the boots or feet or the workers who are repairing or laying the pipeline.
  • When the source of the water is a spring. Most all springs contain germs from latrines and animal excreta that seep into the spring even from long distances away from the water. In most cases it is difficult to pinpoint where the contamination is coming from making it necessary to disinfect much more frequently.
Just as there are many reasons to disinfect, there are options in methods to keep water distribution systems clean.
  • Chemical Disinfectant: Chemical disinfection is the primary method to disinfect. It consists of utilizing a strong solution and introducing it into the water system for a predetermined amount of time to efficiently make any microorganisms inactive. Chemical disinfectants include combined chlorine, chlorine dioxide and free chlorine. There are steps prior to and following the disinfecting process that need to be evaluated and determined to make the process successful.
  • Ultraviolet Disinfection: Although its not documented in use to inactivate microorganisms in water mainlines, based on its success in many areas UV systems have the potential to be an effective point of use for water with none of the disinfectant residue that can linger.
Keeping your water mainlines clean and disinfected is a primary goal and concern, and should be handled by trained professionals like the ones at Professional Piping Services. They have the experience and the knowledge to keep your community’s water supply safe to drink. Contact them today to talk over your options and to set up an appointment.

Pipeline Leak Detection

Pipeline networks are the safest and most cost effective mode of transporting gases, oil, water and other fluid products.  Pipelines have to maintain high demands of reliability, safety and efficiency due to the long-distance transport required of them. When pipelines are properly maintained, they can last indefinitely without leaks. Regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance can often identify corrosion, particularly at low points where moisture collects, locations of imperfection in the pipes, or at construction joints. Early leak detection can increase system reliability and productivity due to reduced inspection time and downtime. Other and sometimes more significant leaks are often a result of damage from nearby excavation, accidents, possible sabotage or other movement of the earth such as seismic activity or storms and require immediate attention.

Pipeline leak detection is used to determine if and oftentimes where a leak has occurred. The primary purpose of leak detection system is to assist those who control the pipelines localize and detect leaks. There are various methods of detection, including laser technology, infrared and hydrostatic testing.

No matter the situation, whether a suspected leak needs investigation or you would like to set up a scheduled maintenance plan, Professional Piping Services is there for you with the experience and expertise to do the job right. Contact them today to discuss the best course of action for all your piping needs.

Protect and maintain water distribution system piping

Protecting and maintaining water distribution system piping is vital to ensuring high quality drinking water. This piping carries drinking water from a centralized treatment plant or well supplies to users taps. Spanning nearly a million miles in the US alone, these piping systems are a primary challenge to maintain from both a public health  management and operational standpoint.

Recent reports suggest that water distribution systems, including piping, are a source of contamination that often is not fully addressed. These reports identify various strategies that can be considered to reduce the risks of water-quality deteriorating in the distribution systems. Specific attention is given to piping, backflow events in cross connections, and the risk for contamination of the distribution system during repairs and other construction activities.

Professional Piping Services is knowledgeable regarding the advances is detection, monitoring techniques that enable cities and communities to further reduce risks associated with drinking water distribution.Contact them today to discuss the upkeep and cleaning of your piping systems to ensure your consumers a safe water supply.

Is your piping system clean enough?

Pipelines thought to be “clean enough” rarely are, especially when it comes to preparing for an in-line inspection (ILI).

The delicate sensors on ILI tools require proper contact with the pipe walls to record accurate and high-quality information about corrosion, dents, metal loss, build-up amongst other anomalies. When contaminants, scale or debris get in the way, the sensors’ ability to do their job is compromised and often results in a failed ILI tool run with significant cost consequences. Additional runs, lost production, increased downtime, repair efforts or tool recovery all are considerable costs added to the ILI budget and schedule.

To help prevent this sensor lift off and increase the odds of a successful ILI, operators should begin with a pre-cleaning protocol of the piping system, typically propgressive piping. This protocol is a method of running increasingly aggressive cleaning pigs in a set order until the operator’s cleanliness specifications are met.

Having the cleanest pipe possible is a first step to ILI success.. Determining the best pre-ILI cleaning approach isn’t a matter of guesswork or starting over with a clean slate. It’s best handled by trained and knowledgeable people like the one at Professional Piping Services Inc. Contact them today to discuss all your piping questions and needs.
